So, what's the protocol for when a warden shoots an inmate? Or, specifically, their inmate?

[OOC: In reference to him shooting Mindy like a week ago with no comment at all. HE KIND OF FINDS THAT DISTURBING. And sorry for the fail post, I'm just sort of easing back into RP, and APPARENTLY MY BRAIN'S NOT READY YET.]

[Mindy groans and flops back in her infirmary bed, scowling at the ceiling. All right, she walked herself into that one. Still. She can't help feeling a little manipulated.]

[Meanwhile, Arthur's feeling pretty pissed off at himself-- and at the other wardens. Not because they called him on doing something stupid (he knew he screwed up, and he wasn't trying to hide from it), but because they decided to get self righteous after ignoring the matter for a week. Still, bringing that up won't win him any favors, so he decides to keep quiet. Once he reaches the Infirmary, he makes a beeline for Mindy's bed and pulls up a seat.]

So. How bored are you?

[She just gives him a Look. Seriously. She's sitting in the middle of a hospital-type-thing, which she never has to do because hospitals ask uncomfortable questions, with no comics, nothing to occupy her hands, nada.

HOW DOES HE THINK SHE'S DOING.]

[He shrugs and sits on the aforementioned pulled-up seat.] I hate small talk, too. [Is he going to apologize for shooting her?]

[No, because she strangled him.]

I suppose it's obvious by now that I'm not really a librarian.

No, y'think? [EYEROLL. She squirrels around in an attempt to get comfortable.] You're too clean for the mob and too anal to be a cop. Are you government or independent?

Independent. Well outside the boundaries of the law. [Unlike Mindy, though, he couldn't claim that he was doing anything for the good of, well, anybody but Cobb.] It pays to keep a gun close by in my line of work.

What d'you do? [She finally gives up on being comfortable and starts pulling threads out of her sheets instead. He seems like the kind of guy who deals in information. Drugs are too messy, an assassin has a different kind of air about them.]

[He casts a quick glance around to see if anybody's nearby and listening. NOPE. Time to establish some trust.] Extraction. [He watches her to see if that rings any bells, since he doesn't know which worlds the technology exists in.]

[...no, no he's pretty much a thief.]

Okay. A thief. [He pauses, then leans forward slightly to explain further.] Extractors, where I'm from, deal in information-- we take it directly from the source. [He points to his head.] The mind.

[She eyeballs him warily.] So what, you hypnotize people?

[He shakes his head.] No. No, it's more complicated than that. We use dreams. [He rubs the back of his neck, taking another quick glance around.] Years ago, the technology was developed to allow for shared dreaming-- the ability to enter somebody else's subconscious while asleep. It was used by the military, originally, as a convenient tool to train soldiers. They could shoot, kill each other, without any of the consequences, because... What happens when you die in a dream? [He gives her a knowing look, because come on, everybody knows this.] You wake up.

Eventually, more enterprising individuals entered the picture. And that was how extractors became involved. Corporations, world leaders, celebrities-- people with money and power, interested in the secrets of their competitors.

[..Bad. Ass.

She stares for a second, narrow-eyed.] ...How the fuck are you so boring?

[Arthur just BITES BACK A SIGH. This is like being surrounded by a hundred Eameses.] I wouldn't call myself boring.

[He clasps his hands together, dangling them between his knees.] So now you know something about me. My secret identity, as it were.

What would you call yourself? [She's guessing 'limpdick'.] A librarian. You couldn't, I dunno, go for reporter or photojournalist or something cliche but interesting?

[Although the librarian thing makes a kind of sense, what with his business being with the brain.

Still.

[He makes a face, a teeny bit irked that she was criticizing his cover.] Generally, you want your cover to be something that can stand up to questioning. Or deflect it entirely. [Arthur shifts back in his seat to take another look around.] "Research librarian" was bland enough to do the trick. Nobody questioned it-- [He lets out an irritated little snort.] --until the gun came out.

...Then they're all dumbasses. A mild-mannered librarian doesn't come to a place like this.

Neither do harmless kids, and yet everybody seems to think that's what you are. [He tries to offer a little smile, in hopes that MAYBE THEY CAN SORT OF BOND A LITTLE.] So we've both benefited from their lack of questioning.
