As I understand it, the recent attack on [There's a SLIGHT pause, and Arthur's voice goes completely deadpan.] Victor Frankenstein [And back to normal!] was perpetrated through the use of a... "burning machine," as the victim called it.

[Wryly:] Given the lack of retail options on the Barge, I'm going to assume the device was made with found objects. [A beat.] Has anybody taken it apart and figured out where each piece of the machine came from? If they even came from the Barge at all. It could help us figure out where to beef up security.

[He starts to say something else, then stops. Nope, Arthur's not touching all of the recent drama and grumbling with a ten foot pole.]

[He stops with the wary looks when he gets near the stairwells (by reflex, bugs love stairwells and alleys). He's not really expecting Arthur to be immediately ready to reach for him, but he'll be grabbing for his wrists as soon as he realizes it's happening.]

[As soon as the door opens, Arthur reaches out, his intent to grab and maneuver them around so that he can get an arm around the other man's neck and keep him in a hold. Then, he can ask his questions. However, the big wrench in his plan? K is older and likely more experienced than him. For as skilled as Arthur is, he doesn't know what this man's packing, and he definitely doesn't look like a pushover.]

[The weirdest thing is, perhaps, that he reacts quietly. No yelling or even grunting when he's struck at, and remains pretty damn calm. He slips down to try and avoid the neckhold, but keeps hold of Arthur's arms to try and turn him and shove him toward the opposite end of that stairwell level, just to get him out of immediate reach.

He almost wanted to shove him up against the wall for cuffing, but then he realizes that gut reaction is probably better used for an alien before he can follow through. Nope, not wanting to restrain him.]

[Well, that didn't go as expected. If he was dealing with an Inmate, Arthur would keep fighting, relentlessly, until he was able to escape to somewhere safer and more out in the open. If it was a projection, he'd attack with the intent to kill. But it's another warden, and one who's not going to go down easily. After he's shoved, Arthur regains his bearings quickly and turns to keep things face-to-face with the man. He's tense, suspicious, but for now, he's standing down.]

Why were you following me. [His voice is flat and without inflection. It's more of an accusation and less of a question.]

[He remains tensed, watching him keenly from the opposite side of the stairwell.] I was gonna ask to talk to you in private once we got to the stairwell.... [That complete and utterly serious tone.]

[He arches a brow.] And you couldn't think of a less suspicious way to approach me?

Most people don't think anything of it. [which at least confirms some of his suspicions.] You're Arthur, right? [Of course he knows his name. But he's never introduced himself in much of any official capacity.]

[Arthur gives him a challenging look.] Name one person who doesn't think anything of it when a stranger turns and tails them.

And you're Kay.

I could name five on board this boat. [He relaxes and crosses his arms, and nods in the particular direction he's meaning to go at some point.] Could you make time to meet me in the pub?

Then it sounds like they've never lived in a city. [He laughs humorlessly.] Or got the memo that they're on a prison barge.

[Arthur looks in that direction briefly, then back to K.] All this to ask me for a drink? Why?

Gets boring having a drink by yourself. [He shrugs.] There's a jukebox, a single entrance, and also human bartenders. [And then, rather than saying out loud why that's significant, he taps his ear. Humans don't have supernatural hearing.]

[He thinks for a moment, then nods reluctantly.] I'll hear you out. [He looks up the stairs again.] After dinner.

[He nods] You might wanna ask the admiral or Amanda's warden for receipts from port, too. [Because that's what he would do if he wanted to be sure a psychotic inmate didn't get their hands on the wrong thing. He heads down the stairs, so he can play pool and have another look around.]

I'm not in the business of asking the Admiral for help. [He nods in return.] But thanks for the advice. I'll see you later.

[OOC: CONTINUE THE SPAM FROM HERE? Or start a log?]

[Spam] I can go either way. Except for staying awake. Apparently I can't do that.

[And after dinner, Arthur shows up at the pub, his body language guarded.]

[Kay's sitting relatively near the jukebox, listening to the Beatles at the moment and reading some random shock mag he picked up at port. He looks bored as hell (but he always looks bored as hell) with his half-finished beer, until Arthur walks in and he puts it down and motions him over.] Nice move earlier, Slick.

It would've been nicer if it'd succeeded. [Was that Arthur for a joke, or was he serious? Who knows! He casts a look at the bartender and takes the barstool next to Kay, all business.]

[It's hard to tell jokes from two guys with sticks up their-] I noticed that you're a little more inquisitive than most of other wardens. [He folds his arms and leans against the table.]

[He motions for a drink and orders a red wine, then turns his attention to Kay again.]

I just try to ask the right questions.

They're good questions to ask. A lotta those questions don't always outwardly seem to relate to you, but they're good questions. Of course, the library might have been a good place to find information since they've got some reference materials relating to people on board. [Fictitious and otherwise.] But you've decided you're done with it.

In a place like this, it pays to get a lay of the land. [He shrugs a little, then says nothing as his drink arrives. He just nods at the bartender and nurses the wine glass.] When the Doctor returned, it just seemed right to give him his job back.

Not a job that he seemed to care much about. The Doctor doesn't like to be in charge of things. [He takes a few long drinks of the beer, taking up the space between songs before he puts it down.] I'll cut to the chase. How game are you for some information sharing?

[He shrugs again, as though he has no opinion on the matter.] He seemed to like it good enough.

[Arthur's expression doesn't change, save for a sharp and very brief look he gives Kay-- it's there for a split second, then it's gone.] What kind of information and why me? There are plenty of wardens who've been here longer.

Nothing specific. Like you mentioned, and it pays to know and if you get that lot in a room together all they wanna do is snarl and bite each other's asses off like wolves over a kill that's not even there. I'm gettin' the feeling even with all the backstabbing going on, the inmates are gettin' their shit together to a higher degree than we are. And the wardens that have been here the longest are the worst for it. [He looks at some article about a "living batboy!" that his drink has left a ring around.] Right now... there's an inmate on the networks who can absorb information and funnel it through her cybernetic head and extrapolate conclusions. It could leave any one of us in a whole big pile of shit and I'm not really lookin' forward to trying out that death toll. [Sanctioned clones are bad enough.]
